Protect your ski lodge with the Barrack Insurance Program, exclusively available to SLOPES members
Barrack Broking is proud to have been the insurance broker partner for the Ski Lodges Organisation of Perisher, Smiggins and Guthega Inc. (SLOPES) since 2020, managing an insurance program on behalf of SLOPES and member clubs. For over three decades SLOPES has represented the club lodges of the Perisher Range Resorts – looking after the interests of clubs, their members, families and guests who share a passion for the mountains. Insurance is one of the more complex and consequential issues facing club lodges today, and Barrack Broking is appointed to help member clubs navigate a challenging alpine insurance market. This page is here to help SLOPES member clubs better understand the insurance program, how it works, and how to get in touch with our team. Our mission is to be seen as an extension of your lodge, providing valued insurance and risk management solutions, as well as advice tailored to your needs. A Dedicated Program for SLOPES Members
Alpine accommodation is a specialist risk. Ski lodges face a combination of exposures rarely found together anywhere else – severe weather, bushfire, remote locations, seasonal occupancy, ageing building stock, and the practical challenges of running a not-for-profit club lodge with volunteer committees rather than professional property managers. In recent years this risk has become harder to place. Several insurers have exited the Australian ski lodge sector altogether, and the capacity that remains has tightened considerably.
The insurance program for SLOPES members (“Insurance Program”) brings participating clubs together under a single, professionally managed program.
- Club lodges are presented to the insurance market collectively, backed by a track record and scale that individual clubs can’t achieve on their own.
- Clubs gain access to insurers with an appetite for alpine and ski lodge risk, including some markets not readily available to individual clubs.
- Clubs receive risk management tips and practices, helping to strengthen how each lodge presents to insurers.
- Clubs access dedicated support from a broking team that understands the unique operating environment of accommodation and ski lodge risks.
The Insurance Program consists of:
- Industrial Special Risks insurance for property and business interruption cover. The cover includes bushfire to the full limit of liability.
- Public & Products Liability insurance to cover the lodge for claims from third parties alleging personal injury or property damage.
- Directors & Officers insurance, to protect the lodge, directors and volunteers from risks inherent in managing the club.
- Voluntary Workers Personal Accident Insurance.
- Other insurances, such as Snowmobile Insurance, Machinery Breakdown, and Cyber Liability.
Specialist Broker for the Alpine Sector
SLOPES members are supported by a dedicated Barrack Broking team acting for SLOPES and other Australian ski lodges. The team manages the insurance for over $500m of alpine property assets, and brings current knowledge of the alpine sector and its insurance markets.Barrack is a specialist insurance broker to the accommodation sector. We’re also the current broker partner to Accommodation Australia, the peak body for the Australian accommodation sector, and bring that depth of sector knowledge to the SLOPES program for participating SLOPES members. We understand that no two lodges are the same, and that a board and volunteer committee need a broker who understands the unique requirements of the alpine sector, can explain things clearly, and can respond quickly when it comes to placing and managing cover.
As part of the Insurance Program, our team:
- Works with each member club to understand its lodge, its committee, and its specific risks
- Prepares and presents individual club risk information to insurers in the best possible light
- Negotiates terms, pricing and coverage on behalf of member clubs each renewal
- Provides guidance on practical risk management steps that can help protect a lodge and support future insurability
- Assists with claims, providing hands-on support from industry experts.
